We had a lovely day for our first task of the winter at Thurlby Wood. We have been helping Colin, the owner (or custodian, as he prefers) with the management of this wood for about ten years now, but there is still plenty to do!
Seven of us worked hard all day, chopping up and burning the twiggier bits of trees – mainly hazel – that Colin had coppiced earlier in the week along the ride near the entrance to the wood. It is now much more open, allowing in light that will encourage wild flowers to spread there, and that in turn will benefit insects and birds.
We stacked the larger pieces of wood, ready for Colin to use to create new habitat piles – great places for all sorts of bugs and beasties to flourish.
Many thanks to Colin for the task and the contribution to our funds and to Niamh for leading. We look forward to returning in January 2017, and hope for a good turnout.
