We definitely do not want rain on a tools maintenance workday, but although the forecast wasn’t great it wasn’t bad enough to postpone this task. And going ahead was the right decision as it stayed dry until late afternoon, so the seven of us who turned out enjoyed a warm and often sunny day. Cakes – served in a safe, socially distanced way – were also enjoyed at the tea and lunch breaks.
Covid restrictions meant that we didn’t have a maintenance task last year, so it was two years since we'd properly checked all the tools, but as those same restrictions put paid to our workday programme for many months the tools haven’t been used as much as usual, so generally everything was in good condition. Saw teeth were straightened, shears were sharpened, scythes were repaired and everything was oiled. We also checked and updated our list of tools as everything was put back neatly in the tool sheds. Now we know that all the tools are ready for the rest of our summer programme and for tasks throughout the winter.
