A great day on Sunday at LWT’s Kirkby Gravel Pits, near Kirkby on Bain, in spite of some rain in the
morning. A small but lovely reserve and a first visit for us.
morning. A small but lovely reserve and a first visit for us.
Kevin, the warden, had made our job of putting up a new 40-metre-long post-and-rail fence easier as
he’d already removed the old fence and marked the positions for new posts.
he’d already removed the old fence and marked the positions for new posts.
Our willing group of nine soon settled into an efficient routine. We worked in pairs to get the new
posts in first and found that Kevin’s promise that the ground was easy-to-dig sandy soil wasn’t quite
true as in places it was a heavy loam, and some hard work was also needed to dig out a few
remaining stumps from the rotten old posts and the stones that had been packed around them
when the fence was put up 10 years ago.

Once the posts were in place we were able to cut the rails to size to fit between the posts and nail
them into place. We used four rails, starting quite close to the ground. The fence is needed to stop
any sheep grazing on the reserve from wandering through the trees to the edge of the lake, as the
narrow strip of land bordering the lake belongs to a neighbouring property, not LWT, so we had to
make sure there wasn’t enough space for any adventurous and determined sheep to squeeze under
the fence!

It was a day of great teamwork, finishing in sunshine. We are very pleased with the finished fence
and Kevin is delighted with what we achieved.
