Thirteen Lincoln Conservation Group volunteers joined forces with members of Nettleham Woodland Trust in a variety of tasks at Ashing Lane Nature Reserve, Dunholme. In the morning, we were largely involved in raking-up freshly cut grass in the Memorial Garden, clearing the nursery bed of encroaching mint and blackthorn, and cutting back a large blackthorn hedge along the ‘All Abilities Area’ of the site.
After lunch, the volunteers took a walk over to the new wildlife tower to see if they could spot any of the first residents to take up lodgings at the tower. Afterwards, a couple of pleasant hours were spent clearing paths from summer regrowth, staining wooden benches, and progressing the blackthorn hedge. Whilst working on our tasks, we were delighted to see lizards basking in the sun and rabbits sheltering in the undergrowth and less keen to see wasps nesting in the hay and hornets nesting in the bird box! All in a day’s work…
