Another great task spent at Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT) HQ at Banovallum House, Horncastle, managing their wildflower meadow in the grounds. There were 13 of us plus Aidan and others from LWT.
We had one new volunteer plus half of the team hadn’t used the scythes before, so we split up and some of those with knowledge set up some of the scythes, while others helped those new to the skill. There wasn’t a large area to cut. We removed the cuttings from the half where the grass had been thickest for composting, then the cuttings from the area rich in wildflowers were spread over the first area we had previously so the seeds will disperse in this area. We also had some yellow rattle seeds we spread first into this area; the parasitic yellow rattle will stunt the grass still growing there.

We also cut back overhanging brances, nettles and brambles along a lane at the back and raked that off, to widen access for the machines to get in to cut the large field.
I made a cake that was soon polished off at break. We had finished by lunch time. We held our AGM then voted in our committee for the next season.
Great day had by all, we even managed to miss the rain.
