For this task, we returned to Tunman Wood, near Eagle Barnsdale, to continue with the mammoth task of thinning out the dense woodland of, mostly, silver birch trees - the idea being to encourage the spread of bluebells and other ground woodland flora in the wood. This approach has worked well in other areas in Tunman.
Fourteen of us turned out on a cold but sunny day. There were 3 new volunteers joining us: welcome to Lydia, Janet and Stacey. |
Howard quickly got a bonfire going, using the ‘pergola’ approach. We soon opened up several areas, creating a number of wood piles and burning the brash and smaller stuff. Simon and Jeff took away some of the larger trunks for firewood (Simon) and wedding table numbers (Jeff), although it was a bit of a trek back to the cars. |
The weather stayed good until later in the afternoon and we packed up by 3pm, having let the fire burn down, just before the rain started. Another enjoyable task.
