Thirteen volunteers continued with the work we began when we were here just six weeks ago. Again we cut back willow that is encroaching along one of the main rides. In some areas we cut further back into the wood to create a scallop effect along the ride. These cut-back areas allow more light on to the woodland floor and benefit plants that would otherwise be shaded out. Plants such as wood anemones, snowdrops, primroses and bluebells will benefit from the increased light levels thus increasing the variety of flora to be seen. The coppiced wood was put into stacks to make a number of habitat piles.
I’m sure we’ll be back in a year or so’s time to continue with this valuable and enjoyable work. It’s a lovely place to be - nice and quiet and good for a bit of mindfulness.
