A good turnout today, up to 16 of us in the afternoon. The weather was good and after our usual tools talk and outline of the work, we soon all got going. There was a lot of silver birch and willow to be cut in a few different areas, to let in light and encourage fenland flora, so we set to with mainly loppers, and bowsaws for the bigger pieces. Nick got a bonfire going, enabling us to start burning material from an early stage.
The day progressed well. People stood for a while too and enjoyed the location we were in with lots of sunlight coming through the trees, which was very photogenic!
As well as burning the cut material, some we took along to the hide near the entrance. This we piled up either side of it to make a barrier to deter people walking round its sides and accessing the shore of the lake and disturbing wildlife. A gentleman we met said earlier that morning he had seen a Bittern and some Marsh Harriers – lucky chap!!
Towards the end of the day Emily from Whisby Nature Park (and an L.C.G. member) came to help and attempted to treat the cut stumps to prevent re-growth. Sadly, this was rained off by rain that wasn’t forecast! Walking back to our cars we got a bit damp from the unexpected rain. The upside however was a super double rainbow. Every cloud…..
